Root canal therapy becomes necessary when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected due to tooth decay. Initially, root canal treatment consists of removing the affected pulp and surrounding inflamed tissue. Once this is done the root canal area and system are thoroughly cleaned and sealed to prevent further infection. Though 90% of these procedures are successful, it is possible for conditions to be unfavorable and Dr. Ricks will be able to tell you upon the day of the procedure if this is the case. Some cases, depending on the existing damage, are more delicate than others and do not take well to treatment. This can result in reinfection or other complications following the initial root canal treatment. Endodontic retreatment is the next line of defense. Dr. Ricks will remove the root canal filling and replace it to reinstitute root canal therapy. An apicoectomy may become necessary if all other previous methods fail to heal properly. During an apicoectomy, the bone and inflamed tissue are exposed by an incision made in the gum tissue. The inflamed tissue and the infected root tip are both removed by our
Aurora root canal specialist. A root-end filling will then be placed over the affected area, to again prevent further infection of the root. The gum is then sutured and the bone naturally heals over a time period of a few months.
Our
Aurora root canal specialist wants to make sure that every procedure is virtually pain free, so local anesthetic will be applied during this procedure. You may experience some swelling and discomfort at the site of the surgery, but full function will return in no time. Nerve endings are incredibly delicate, making root canal surgeries equally delicate. Dr. Ricks is here to provide you and your family with the gentlest dental care to ensure that you cease to feel pain during and after your dental procedure.
